Hello! Today, I want to show you my sound redesign for a VFX made by Gabriel Sanchez for Grinding Gear Games, the developers of the awesome Path of Exile II.

Just a quick disclaimer: I’m not affiliated with Grinding Gear Games, this is just a personal sound redesign of this amazing visual effect.

I decided to work on this because I found the concept super interesting: a crossbow that shoots like a shotgun. My challenge for this SFX was to create something that blends the feel of both a crossbow and a shotgun.

As you’ll hear, all the mechanical parts of the shot are made of wooden sounds. This was a creative choice to give the impression that the crossbow’s mechanism is built entirely out of wood, while the shot itself is purely a shotgun blast.

In my first version (which I later changed based on feedback), I had two separate SFX: one for the crossbow and one for the shotgun. However, that approach didn’t really work well. After the feedback, I reworked the shot to blend everything more naturally: in the first milliseconds you hear the crossbow, then the shotgun blast, and finally a touch of the crossbow again at the end.

Another big challenge was the tail. Thanks to Convolver by Kilohearts, I added a long explosion impulse response inside the plugin to create a satisfying tail, at least I hope so, haha!

This was an awesome challenge, and I can’t wait to share more content like this with you.

Thank you!
