Path of Exile - The Nine Things That Sabotaged Synthesis (Full Editorial)
This is the full-length podcast-style editorial. It went so long that I ended up recording a concise version as well.
A shorter version is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeMFulNI1NY
I've loved Synthesis.
However this league has had a fairly negative reception. In this video I break down four positive and nine negative points about the league.
League Positives:
- 'Breach Like Zones' - both the Memory Fragments and Nexus zones have been exciting short bursts of extremely intense combat, just like a breach
- Durable rare monsters - the monsters are tough enough to put up a serious fight, not just to die and then (maybe) kill you with an after-death effect like Frost Bearers.
- A whole swathe of new crafting options
- A generally more casual friendly economy with reduced variance (this was mostly cut from the short version of the video, the long one may be needed to follow this point)
Negatives:
- Released unfinished. 3.6.3 was when the league felt 'ready' for release, it took (IIRC) 20 days!
- Failing memories due to decay brings back memories of 'blind jumps' in 1980s platformers
- Its rewards remain outshined by Delve
- Uninformed use of the Synthesizer gets awful results (unlike Delve fossils which can still give good results when used 'naively')
- Betrayal lag remains an issue for a large minority
- Bosses were too easy at release but this was handled terribly
- The ten memory limit interrupts mapping flow too much
- Players don't earn enough tier 8-12 maps through natural play before they become too powerful for tier 1-7 maps to be engaging any more
- Most of all, POE trading sucks, and Synthesis's main crafting mechanisms RELY upon doing a lot of trading.
