Was just fiddling about with my old Aeon save, getting it prepared for the DLC involving time travel, re-learning how to play, and I decided to check the changes made. It used to be the case that you couldn't refuse the portal/rift and HAD to change the past if you were a True Aeon.

Honestly? I'm somewhat disappointed but not terribly so - after all, immediately after this I reloaded to just before the portal and did the True Aeon ending again. Seems they fixed the ending slides on that one - but it isn't worth re-uploading just to show them.
