The reason most puzzle games are about squares, cubes, tesseracts, or the such is because squares are the very building blocks of computer monitors themselves. Consider the following: it is impossible to have video games without computer monitors, and as we all know, computer monitors are made of pixels, which are just really small cubes. And, computer monitors were invented by smart people, and smart people are more likely to enjoy puzzle games; therefore, puzzle gamers are more likely to be computer monitor inventors, thus explaining why puzzle games deal with squares (and their other-dimensional equivalents) so much.
