There are many payment models in videogames, MMO or not. Sometimes there's a bit of confusion about which is which, so we decided to give you some explanation on what you should expect from them. You're probably familiar with the terms already but here's in short what they mean. For a detailed breakthrough watch the video.
Free-to-Play (F2P): The game is free to download and/or play, but there's a cash shop where you can buy items with real money. The way to do it properly is to limit the items to cosmetics and non-game-breaking items (example: Dota 2 and SMITE).
Buy-to-Play (B2P): You buy the base game and you don't have to pay any kind of subscription fee. You may get additional content and patches for free, but you usually have to buy the expansion packs (example: Guild Wars 2).
Subscription-Based: You buy the base game and have to pay a monthly fee (or choose other options) to keep playing (example: The Elder Scrolls Online and World of Warcraft).
Paid DLC: You buy the base game and may get some extra DLC (campaigns, characters) either if you pre-ordered or by purchasing the future DLC (example: Far Cry 4)
Freemium: The game is free to download and/or play, but in-game purchases with real money are so incentivized that you're unlikely to enjoy the game without regularly resorting to paying (example: Candy Crush Saga, Dungeon Keeper Mobile and plenty of mobile and browser-based games).
