PC Centric Rig - PS4/Xbox One PC Alternative Build Guide
PC Centric looks at the best components for a budget, console beating PC. Sure the Xbox One and PS4 are both powerful, but you can do better for a similar price...
AMD FX 6300 Six Core Processor - £84.73/$119.99
A great budget processor that is similar to both next gen consoles.
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P Motherboard - £52.76/$79.99
A brilliant budget motherboard with 6 sata ports and support for two GPU crossfireX.
Corsair 200R ATX Case - £47.04/$59.99
A great quality cheap case, it looks good whilst being easy and spacious to build in.
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Blue 8GB RAM - £65.76/$84.99
For a budget rig, 4GB is not enough, but 8GB is too expensive. You can go with one 4GB stick and get another later, but like both consoles, 8GB is included in this rig.
MSI (Asus for U.S) Radeon R9 270X Graphics Card - £149.12/$184.99
This card represents great value - £150 and it can blitz through games at high settings.
XFX PRO 550W Power Supply - £49.86/$69.99
550w is more than you should need in this PC, its even rated 80 plus bronze efficient.
1TB WD Blue Hard Drive - £45.58/$69.99
Great value for tons of storage. Add an SSD later for performance.
Windows 8.1 OEM - £70.77/$99.99
A PC needs Windows, and Windows 8.1 is the best version so far, If you need reasons not to get Windows 7 over 8, see my other videos.
Optional Extras
DVD Drive - £13/$18
You just won't use this often anymore, it gives you the option to buy physical though.
SanDisk 128GB Ultra Plus SSD - £67/$90
A massive upgrade to your PC, the most important non gaming component. Its not budget though...
ASUS DGX Soundcard - £25.81/$50
By no means essential, but if you want a decent set of speakers or cans, then you should get a sound card to get the most out of it. It has a headphone amp too.
This PC is not the lowest you can go when buying a PC, you can get decent components for less. That is not the point of this though, this PC build is the the lowest I would go when recommending a quality PC with at least a 5 year life-cycle. All these components are quality, budget pieces of the puzzle.
Well then, this brings the base price to £576/$794, which as you have probably noticed, is more than both the PS4 and Xbox One. Why spend more on this rig then you ask? Well, firstly this is a fully functional Windows PC; if you bought a PS4 for £349, you wouldn't be able to get a PC (especially of this caliber) for £220.
The main reason to spend the extra £220 though is for the gaming PC platform. Thousands of titles, hundreds of exclusives (including many free to play), superior graphics, but of course, price. Buy Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed 4 on PS4 and it will cost you £90. Buy on PC and you can get them for as low as £45-50. Of course the various sales mean that they will become even cheaper at times. Combine the savings over the life-cycle, and that comes to a hefty sum. PC is an investment worth making, and this budget rig will provide a superior experience, for less.
