BRIEFING

Entry #20 (My Only Hope)

April 27, 2006

I have watched you move about this dark place for some time now, inspecting various items around the house. You carry what remains of my diary! We were both lost long ago and you must listen, for I have little time!

I have been trapped here for so long, and you are my only hope to break free of this horrible place. Please listen and do as I say before HE returns! HE keeps me in the cellar, but you must look beyond the brick and mortar. The last locked door requires seven skeleton keys which are hidden throughout the house. Without your help, I can never go home.

THE LOCKSMITH

Chapter 20 – Exhumation

Compared to his siblings, Victor Dalimar lived a far more subdued life. The closest thing he got to adventure was when he joined the military, a spontaneous decision following his graduation in 1919. Still drunk off the vapors of World War I, he was left sorely disappointed when he received orders of his deployment to Waziristan, in the throes of a war with opportunistic rebels from the indigenous Karlani Pashtun tribes. Even after his tour concluded, Victor still couldn’t pinpoint where the area actually was on a map, let alone the nation of Pakistan.

Still, his tour wasn’t all gloom and doom, as he had established a firm rapport with his commander, and weathered man by the name of Brigadier Carpenter. He was a compelling leader, British enough for Victor’s fellow privates to call him “Dennis”, but also Indian enough for his sepoy compatriots to call him “Dinesh”. Though they seldom went over their histories, the two men became close friends, Victor even going as far to consider the brigadier to be the brother he never had.

The two maintained correspondence throughout the following years, but the prospect of cauterization was all but inevitable. In his last letter to Victor, a short essay dated from January 28, 1942, Lt. Gen. Carpenter told him that he would be transferred to Malaya, citing the increasing belligerence of Imperial Japan. Though he was cocksure in his affirmations that he was undaunted by such developments, the concurrent silence was a deafening rebuttal. Despite his attempts at rationalization, all it took was a glimpse at a gruesome summary of the Fall of Singapore for Victor to confirm that his best friend was permanently gone.
