BRIEFING

Entry #11 (Doctor’s Visit)

June 14, 1895

I grow weaker with each day’s passing, and last night took a turn for the worse. I am now experiencing blackouts and find it difficult to keep my mind focused. My body seems almost incapable of regulating temperature.

June 15, 1895

Dr. Stanley Clarkson, the local physician, arrived again this morning and ran his routine array of probing and reviewing my failing condition. I am exhausted with the endless parade of horse pills and repulsive elixirs I must ingest in hopes of restraining my symptoms.

Charles, too, has become exceedingly fatigued with the burden of my care and has suggested we take hire of a live-in nursemaid to provide assistance. I am fortunate to have such a kindly friend.

THE LOCKSMITH

Chapter 11 – His Princess Alice

As a young adult, Emma was far too preoccupied with her education to take notice of the world around her. The last major appointment of her father, however, would provide her with her chance to explore. Little did he suspect that such an opportunity would have dire consequences, clouded by the unpredictability of events yet to transpire.

On New Year’s Day of 1880, Samuel received notice from James Russell Lowell, then-Ambassador to the United Kingdom under Rutherford B. Hayes, that he required a deputy for his daily tasks. His reasons for choosing Samuel above all others were clear: Lowell had been a fan of Maddie’s articles for the Atlantic Monthly and Samuel’s cumulative performance over the past decade. Flattered, he readily accepted the position, his family consenting after an initial bout of disapproval from his wife.

From the spring of 1880 to 1884, he had resided in London as Lowell’s second opinion. Although Europe was in a league far greater than Wyoming or Washington, Samuel’s efficiency hadn’t abated. Nevertheless, apart from embarrassingly staining then-Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone’s parlor carpet after a hard hit of port, Samuel’s tenure was indefatigably milquetoast. Still, Samuel would forge one friendship that would prove to be a key variable in Emma’s future.

Shortly after arriving in London, Samuel had made the acquaintance of Sir Edward Thornton, Lowell’s British mirror. It was only a matter of months before he had realized he was confiding far more with him than he was with Lowell. They often shared reminiscences during their encounters, shifting their communications to correspondence following Samuel’s return to the United States. Samuel had often talked about his daughter, hoping to imbibe her with his hunger for exploration and education. Frequently, Edward had offered to give his daughter lodgings at the Blackpool boarding house of Meredith Thornton, his wife, once Emma had come of age and was ready to spread her wings.

Although her focus was initially towards becoming a professor, Emma’s career shifted towards public teaching after she had concluded her secondary education. Emma made Samuel a proud man when she graduated magna cum laude from St. Mary’s College, just a walk from his alma mater, on May 26, 1894. At long last, she was ready to collect on Edward’s arrangement, heartily accepting her father’s offer as soon as she left campus. Unbeknownst to her, Emma’s curiosity and hunger to explore, much like that of a lamb hobbling around an abattoir, would put her safety in jeopardy.

On August 24, 1894, Emma had arrived in the United Kingdom and begun the process of moving her belongings into her modest apartment in Meredith’s boarding house. Though she had quickly found employment at the local secondary school as a literature teacher, it was only a matter of time before Emma had felt the first signs of loneliness and boredom. According to her earlier diary entries, her conversations with her fellow housemates did little to assuage her hunger, as they had often regaled her with fanciful tales of their courtships with the local gentlemen. Whether or not it was a decision based out of ennui or peer pressure, it was hardly surprising when Emma announced to her friends that she would be attending the town’s Autumn Formal gala.

The densely packed time spanning from the autumn of 1894 to the summer of 1895 is peppered with numerous examples of fate serving to incrementally ensnare Emma Ravenhearst. The evening of October 5, 1894 would be the first of such instances. That night, Emma – with her lavender dress and enrapturing soprano – was one of the many guests whom had attended the dance looking for merriment and love. Unbeknownst to her, another guest had attended with a similar reason.
