BRIEFING

Entry #13 (Feverish Dream)

July 13, 1895

I cannot sleep. Each time I do, something wakes me and I feel chilled. This night, it was a terrible dream, a nightmare that was seemingly quite real, which made my blood pump so that I could not rest…

I was here in this room, sitting in a wheelchair. I looked down to see myself wearing a gown of white, beautifully made of lace and satin. It took a moment to recognize that it was a wedding dress. I felt paralysis throughout my body as I sat, frozen in this gown. My soaring temperature is causing many such frightening nightmares. Also, I am quite concerned that I have yet to receive further communication from home. My father’s health weights greatly on my mind.

THE LOCKSMITH

Chapter 13 – Ramesh

Despite being thousands of miles away from her family, Emma still maintained regular contact with them via telegram. Though the Thorntons provided integral messages to the Ravenhearsts regarding Charles’ decorum, she provided crucial evidence as a primary source toward how their romance was progressing. She had a particularly close relationship with her mother, Maddie, though they were often at odds. Despite Maddie’s attempts to discuss current events, from her opinions on the Cleveland Administration to her coverage of the Dreyfus Affair, it was blatant that her daughter’s priorities laid more with her work and relationships than in current events.

On May 23, 1895, however, the candid nature of their letters ground to a screeching halt. Though the news of Samuel’s bout of shingles was old news, having been brought up in a letter only two weeks prior, Maddie had informed Emma that his condition had deteriorated considerably over that period of time. Samuel Ravenhearst, formerly a spry fifty-one year old, was now bedbound, antagonized by crippling bouts of pneumonia and pain. Given the bleak nature of his prognosis, the town physician had informed Maddie that his family should be in town as soon as possible. Emma, alarmed, initiated her plans to depart for Carroll shortly after. The Thorntons wholly understood her position, though they couldn’t restrain their concern as to how Charles would react to such news.

As they predicted, Charles was devastated by Emma’s decision. Already did he lose her once because of his arrogance, having barely convinced her to give him a second chance. The thought of losing Emma once again was unimaginable. Hours after hearing the revelation, Charles had managed to link her impending departure with his own abandonment, cognizant of what he construed as convenience and selfishness. Knowing that his body couldn’t handle a second bout of overwhelming turmoil, he made the most pivotal decision of his relationship with Emma. He needed to temporarily clip her wings, hoping to at least get enough time to convince her that her sojourn to the United States would be little more than a detour. However, though Charles understood what he had to do, he was stumped as to how he would accomplish it.

Enter Ramesh Chayaparee, one of the regulars at the Merrow’s Cove. London born, he was a man of immense pedigree. His father, a Marathi trade mogul from Bombay, had guaranteed his family’s wealth in the tea and tobacco trade. His brother, Sourav, had been making waves as a rising star with the Tories, a conservative counterforce to the Labor Party’s Dadabhai Naoroji. Ramesh, however, had little interest in civics or law. He had devoted himself to understanding the art of business, obtaining both his MBA and the rights to operate the most prestigious tobacconist shop of the northern United Kingdom. In fact, Ganesh’s Trumpet was as popular a destination in Blackpool as the city’s piers, welcoming as many tourists as businessmen.

During Charles’ period of depression, Ramesh had taken compassion over the despondent chemist, providing him a shoulder to cry on as he metabolized his rejection and sadness. In fact, he was among one of the first men Charles had confided in about his bisexuality, confiding that he was ambivalent on the subject. Ramesh even admitted that he would even be willing to try it if it would resolve Charles’ unhappiness.

Though the nature of Ramesh sexuality is a struggle to comprehend, the nature of his kinks is a clear as crystal. In fact, he had a secret of his own. During his many business trips to British India, he had taken a fancy to the region’s hijras, the country’s citizens of indeterminable gender. However, love was the last thing on Ramesh’s mind. Feigning interest and predating upon their ostracized standing and penury, he easily coerced them into providing him with their services in the most ignored areas of their hometowns.
