Become a Legend is one of my favourite modes across the PES series since its inclusion. However it’s pretty bare-bones and could do with some fleshing out. Here’s my PES 2020 wishlist for Become a Legend.

Player Relationships
It’s something I speak about quite often when asked about my thoughts regarding offline modes. A huge part of team sports is your relationship with your teammates and that dynamic is entirely absent in PES 2019 but would be an amazing step up for PES 2020.

Currently there is not a single benefit or consequence to teamwork and nothing in terms of bond building between players which can often lead to a loveless mercenary-esque journeyman career in a mode that has the potential for so much personality.

Having team spirit increase when players you’ve built a relationship with are on the field and having relationships build from in-game actions like completed passes, goals and assists and decreasing from misplaced/wasted passes, missed chances etc would be a great way to implement this feature, with a view to making it more complex in future.

Performance-Based Development
Currently, the development process is heavily skewed to rely on the training menu you set for your player, but a look over at the rival game FIFA has additional boosts based on your in-game performances. Hitting a goalscoring milestone will give you an additional +1 attribute to your finishing, for example.

PES could build on this, and with its ability to track a wide variety of direct and indirect actions as shown by the Co-op scoring system, you could see how your player’s development could become much more tailored to the individual, rather than just a preset path based entirely on a simple 7-level emphasis system.

Contract Negotiations
A big part of the modern game is the huge earning potential for top players and being able to haggle for more money as your stock rises in the sporting world. Right now, PES 2019 has a really bare bones system where you simply have to pick between the offers presented to you, with no ability to renegotiate any of them.

A solution could be one where the clubs have the ability to offer you incentives that you haggle on, from wages to goal and competition bonuses.

The money you earn could be used to hire an agent who could open up lucrative deals and approach bigger clubs, or hire personal staff like dietitians and personal trainers who would increase your development by varying percentages. Just something to make the contracts and wages matter.

Dynamic Coaching Levels
Bit mental how Burton Albion can offer the same levels of coaching and development as Manchester City, right?

Bigger clubs should be able to offer more training points than smaller clubs, it makes sense. The resources available to a club often directly affect the level of training and backroom staff available. The club ranking updates could provide a base for this system with the top 20 clubs offering the maximum amount of training points then decreasing by 1 with every 10 places down to a minimum of 8 training points, enough to fully max out one area of focus and stick a couple of points elsewhere.

It’d also add another dynamic to contract negotiations when deciding your player’s future!

Training Games
My final suggestion would be training games. An opportunity to bolster development and boost condition by playing through appropriate training scenarios would be much welcomed.

It would be completely optional, perhaps with a 14-day cooldown, and the dev team wouldn’t even need to code in new scenarios, the current training mode remains one of the most complete sections of the game.

Achieving a gold score would boost development and increase the player’s condition by one level, silver would boost development marginally, whilst a bronze or lower would offer no development increase and lower the condition by 1 level and decrease manager trust.

A pretty simple suggestion that I feel would make developing a player a lot more fun in PES 2020 Become a Legend.
