Petoons Party – Custom Painted Joy-Con Cases
A Spanish developer studio (Petoons Studio) asked us whether we’d like to make a video about their newly released game “Petoons Party”. We didn’t hesitate for a moment and decided to support this small indie studio and paint 2 Petoons characters – Deli and Lia – onto a pair of transparent Joy-Con cases. “Petoons Party” is a party game similar to the “Mario Party” series. Petoons Studio also sent us a keycode to try it out.
So, after some test runs this is our opinion:
There are 4 different game boards to choose from. The game is played by 4 players, which are either played by normal persons or by the CPU. Each turn the players roll the dice which determines how many fields they can go along. After all players finished their turn it’s time for a mini game. Until now it sounds like a “Mario Party“ clone, doesn’t it?
Talking about the mini games we have to say that some of them are actually really funny while others are not really intuitive. Most of them tend to be repetitive after some time. In some mini games it’s quite challenging to control the Petoons, since the movements are not so smooth. A positive thing worth pointing out is the lovely style of the game boards and the characters. They look beautiful and perfectly reflect the happy atmosphere.
A great feature is that it’s possible to fast-forward the NPC’s (and also your own) turns. That means you don’t have to wait a long time until your next turn. Another nice feature is that when two (or more) Petoons stand on the same field they play a round rock-paper-scissors. The winner is rewarded with a game point paid by the loser.
At the board’s finish all Petoons fight against the final boss – the evil Kitra. This boss fight is cooperative, so all Petoons have to cooperate with each other. If they can beat the boss, the player with the most points is the overall winner and the game is over.
In our opinion the end fight is a good, but also bad idea. On the one hand all players aim for the most points during the game, but on the other hand they reunite to fight the final boss.
So, this game loses its competitive game play and turns into a cooperative one in the end.
In my opinion all players should be rewarded after they successfully helped to beat Kitra and not just the one with the most points.
All that said, “Petoons Party” is an indie game, which should be supported. Of course the quality is not as high as from games from big studios, but we think that many gamers – especially children will enjoy the game together with their friends.
