The basic principle of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) generators used for generating electricity is described here by a simple model that consists of a parallel plate capacitor immersed in a stream of a conducting liquid in presence of a uniform magnetic field of induction B pointing perpendicular to the stream and parallel to the plates. Area of each plate is A, distance between the plates is d and electrical conductivity of the liquid is sigma. The liquid flows between the plates with a constant velocity v towards left. If a resistance R is connected across the capacitor plates how much power will it dissipate ? From where does this power come ?
