As the lunch day for Starfield gets closer, many are hoping that this game will live up to 10 years of promise from Bethesda to deliver them a new IP that is going to take Bethesda games to the stratosphere. But Starfield is going to have a massive PS5 problem that could not have been anticipated by Phil Spencer when he chose to not release Starfield under PS5. I believe Phil Spencer chose to make Starfield an exclusive because he wanted PlayStation owners who also love Bethesda to want to play the next big Bethesda game and as a result go out and find a place to play that game. And if I'm being honest, this is a really really good plan. But there's one tiny little problem. Or should I say one really really big problem in the form of PS5 plus PG3. That is, Baldur gate 3 is on the PS5 and not on the series consoles. For one thing, PlayStation 5 outnumbers the Xbox Series S and X by a factor of 2 to 1. Meaning that Starfield is not going to be available to over 40 million people who own a PS5. And because of the FTC vs. Microsoft case, a lot of them now know that the reason why is literally because Phil Spencer chose to not release the game on the PS5. And in fact, we know that the game was being developed for the PS5 and Phil Spencer chose to buy the company and then prevent PlayStation players from getting the game. The truth is, a lot of PlayStation players are not going to be happy about this fact. When Phil Spencer chose to make Starfield an exclusive, he could not have anticipated that Baldur gate 3 would release on the same exact day as Starfield. And if that wasn't bad enough, there was no way for him to anticipate that that same game, Baldur gate 3, would not be releasing on the Xbox Series X and S because of the Series S. Let me explain this one simple fact. No company wants a competitor to release a product on the same day of their release. That's just bad for business. And not only that, the thing is, Lariat Studios would not have had any reason to release Baldur gate 3 the same day as Starfield. Think about it. If Baldur gate 3 was releasing on the Xbox Series S and X, they wouldn't release it on the same day as Starfield because that just makes no sense. Both games are RPGs and both games are gigantic. But with the Series S problem, Lariat Studios gets free marketed. They can pitch their game as an alternative to those who do not want to play Starfield. Yes, yes, I know you think that sounds absurd. It doesn't. This is how business works. Giving consumers any reason to be mad at you is not good. Giving them a reason to be mad at you while having an option for them to go to is even worse. And no, no, no, it does not help that Baldur gate 3 is already being considered by many in the industry to be the greatest RPG ever made. Who could have anticipated that the system that Microsoft made as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive X and PlayStation 5 would end up giving the competitor, PlayStation, an advantage? People in the industry have already taken note of this particular problem. Basically asking the question, did Microsoft essentially just shoot themselves in the foot with the Series S? Microsoft needs PlayStation players to try out Xbox games. And it just so happens that in the same breath, Phil Spencer provided a way for PlayStation fans to not even think about Starfield by making the Series S. This puts way more pressure on Starfield to try and be something truly incredible because any hint of a problem, any bug, any bad storytelling, people will point this fact out and say Baldur gate 3 is a better game. I promise you, when Starfield comes out within about a week, you will see a lot of tweets of people saying Baldur gate 3 is better. This is not the kind of comparison that Phil Spencer or anybody at Microsoft wants at all. It doesn't matter what the case is. As I said before, you don't want to have a competing voice in what was supposed to be your coming out party. The biggest game in the past 10 years, the reason you bought Bethesda is finally coming and guess what's in its way? Another major AAA game that's already being considered by many as the game of the year. This is not what Microsoft wants.
