Greg Christensen's Caverns of Mars for Atari 8-bit is a defining entry in the vertically scrolling shoot 'em up genre -- and it was so well received on its original Atari Program Exchange release that it got a full commercial release.

Phobos is the much lesser-known sequel to Caverns of Mars, building on the foundation of the original and adding a bunch more interesting things to worry about!
