It seems like despite the kicks and backhand, backclaw?, the only way it can actually kill pikmin is to pinch them and throw them into his mouth head but it still takes a little while to do it. Moss can't stun it with a charge but she can knock it down and then you can basically stun it. Though to be fair I imagine this boss would be a nightmare without moss since it's surrounded by water and can kick pikmin off faster than it can climb its legs. But thankfully I have moss and she makes it easy.
