Pillar's Game Design Vault -- Battleworld
Build on a wrap-around world of terrain to expand research and battle opponents. Protect your supply stations with command centers or they'll be cut off and destroyed. Defeat opposition to make room for more of your own presence. Have high level technology to fight or survive the struggle for this world. Will you be standing the tallest at the end?
The first in the Battle series, and likely the best option of the three, Battleworld is an odd game: you don't send out represented combat units, instead you have command centers and those are treated as unit generators each turn. You also have to keep your supply protected or lose your command. The dice are brutal for odds and each level of increased difficulty for attack is harder to reach by half. It's still less likely to be as frustrating as a previous attempt at this idea.
