Pillars Of Eternity Episode 5: "Overconfidence Is A Slow And Insidious Killer", Murderhobo Mittwoch
Just to get this out of the way: Mittwoch is German for Wednesday.
Cool? Cool.
Today we are playing Pillars of Eternity, released in 2015.
Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive, the game features traditional CRPG gameplay built around the Infinity Engine. I will be going into this playthrough having only experienced the tutorial dungeon years ago and, as such, I will be learning the ruleset and mechanical systems of the game on the fly. I have no experience with the infinity engine, but if I enjoy this game, I will likely cover the sequel, "Deadfire," in a future Murderhobo Mittwoch Series.
What is Murder-hobo Mittwoch?
This is the series uploaded every wednesday where I will be playing through a wide assortment of CRPGs, both new and old. Some I will have no experience with, others I have played long ago. Either way, I hope you will enjoy coming along for the ride.
What is a CRPG?
CRPG is an acronym for Computer Role Playing Game.
For the purposes of this series, a CRPG will be any role-playing game which allows for a group of adventurers to go through a story of some kind, usually with an isometric view/interface. Some will have turn-based combat, others will be real-time (though usually with some pause functionality to allow issuing specific orders).
Historically, CRPGs were developed to bring the tabletop experience of games like Dungeons & Dragons to the home computer. As time passed, there have been new CRPGs that were inspired by previous CRPGs instead of the table top games the originals attempted to emulate.
Why CRPGs?
I've been a fan of tabletop/pen and paper RPGs since I was a teen and was first introduced to Dungeons and Dragons. I have played a wide variety of them, including Shadowrun, Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and 5th edition, a variety of White Wolf games (most notably Vampire: The Masquerade, World of Darkness, and Hunter: The Reckoning), as well as some that are quite obscure.
This fondness for RPGs easily led to an enjoyment of the computer adaptations of the same experience. The fact that I have been the Dungeon/Game Master for the vast majority of my communal storytelling experiences led me to very much appreciate the opportunity to be the player of a campaign created by someone else.
