Pillars of Eternity - Review Copy First Impressions
124Later this week, Pillars of Eternity launches after over 77,000 crowdfunding backers demanded it to happen. The spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine RPGs of old (Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment), Obsidian’s game has a lot of hype and hope riding on it. Here are our first thoughts after several hours with the review copy.

Pillars of Eternity is an isometric fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment that intends to capture the feeling and gameplay of older RPGs like Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate. Based upon an entirely original IP, Pillars of Eternity was one of Kickstarter's big video game success stories, earning about $4 million in funding.
Gameplay is party-based with battles taking place in a pausable, realtime tactical format. Customization will be important with physical appearahce up to the player, along with race, class (there are 11), traits, culture, and skills all open choice. Up to five companions can also join the player on the adventure, which takes place in a world where a supernatural event has taken place, triggering conflict and problems.
