Eric Gratz, CEO of Battery Resourcers (batteryresourcers.com), shows off the pilot plant in Worcester, Mass., where the start-up company is demonstrating its unique, patented recycling process for lithium-ion batteries at a large scale—the final step before full-scale commercialization. Developed in the laboratory of Yan Wang, William Smith Foundation Dean's Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the process is the only one that can recycle any LI-Ion battery, regardless of chemistry, and then produce new cathode materials that can used to make new batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. Wang and Gratz are co-founders of Battery Resourcers, along with Diran Apelian, Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Mechanical Engineering at WPI and founding director of WPI’s Metal Processing Institute.
