I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game reviews are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. Let's try out those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Jay's Thoughts
Pixeljunk has a reputation for making simple yet sleeking games and Pixeljunk Shooter is no exception. In this game, you take control of a versatile spacecraft and are tasked with exploring an underground cave system on an alien planet to rescue scientists who are stranded there.
The control scheme is very smooth and intuitive. You use the left thumbstick to move in any direction and the right to aim. The game plays a bit like a modern version of Asteroids. Only instead of being stuck on one screen you get to explore around a cave and encounter weird monsters and fun puzzles along the way. The real draw of Shooter is that the caves you explore are full of water, lava, rock, explosive gases, oil, and ice, and each of these elements are governed by realistic fluid physics and interact with each other in interesting ways! Need to get through a pool of lava? Dump water on it, cooling it into destructible rock. Ice in your way? Spray it with lava and it evaporates before your very eyes! A flood of oil is falling into a pool of water? Watch out, because it will morph into explosive gas! Pixeljunk Shooter has been described by some as a remarkably fun chemistry set, and truly it is.
Beyond the very unique chemistry the game's levels are a good mix of combat and puzzle, and the bosses in the game are unique and inventive. Indeed, the only real complaint with this game is that it is perhaps too short! It can easily be beaten in just a few hours, and though there are secrets to find and thus, reasons to go back and replay levels you've already beaten, the game is still very easy to beat.
So where does that leave us? Pixeljunk Shooter is a terrific game, and for its inventive and fun gameplay I wholeheartedly recommend it. However, these days I would actually recommend buying the Ultimate Edition if you're going to get this game. The Ultimate Edition contains the first Shooter along with the sequel (which takes place immediately after the first game ends) and includes a co-op mode in the campaign and a terrific but sadly underrated competitive multiplayer mode which you really must try if you have a friend. So yeah, this is definitely a a game worth playing!
➙ Must You Play It?
An intuitive and simple shooter that mixes its unique and inventive chemistry to create a very fun, if short, game. This is definitely a game worth playing, though if you really like it I recommend getting the Ultimate Edition, which significantly increases the campaign length while adding both co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.
