I return to Sector B2, and our hovercraft is fairly close to the exclamation point on the far right of the minimap. I decide to check that one next, but when we land there’s a cutscene where Rumi announces that King Rock is definitely present in this area. She’s able to psychically detect his presence, and Jacob agrees that he can as well. As such, I promptly leave this area—we need to attack the second breeding site first, and we’ve just confirmed through process of elimination that it’s at the other exclamation point on the minimap’s far left. I head over to that one, and sure enough Rebecca announces she’s spotted a group of Breeders nearby. I give the order to attack, and we’re sent into combat against another team of three Matrick Breeders. I choose the one in the center as our first target, and this time Rumi’s Disrupt is successful. On the enemy’s turn the targeted Breeder self-heals, as expected, but interestingly the other two split their fire. One attacks Tom and the other attacks Joshua, diluting the impact of their strikes. It’s a poor move by the AI, but I’m certainly not going to complain. On our next turn we devastate the now-disrupted Breeder and reduce it to just 10 health. It repairs some of the damage with its Heal ability, but not much—it restores just 29 health. The other two Breeders target Joshua and inflict appreciable damage, but on our next turn we quickly dispatch the damaged Breeder.

There are just two Breeders left now, and on their next turn they decide to double-team Tom—he’s accumulated more aggro than Joshua. Again, it’s a questionable move since it takes the pressure off of Joshua, but I’m not complaining. I have the full party target the Breeder on the left, and even without Disrupt we reduce it to below half-health. It uses its self-heal while the other one attacks Tom, and on our next turn we reduce our target to just 8 health. It heals itself to 37 health, but it’s not nearly enough and on our next turn we easily dispatch it. We now have just one Breeder left to kill, and Rumi hits it with Disrupt to make the process go faster. The Breeder gets one last shot in at Tom to reduce his health to just 4, but from that point forward we don’t need to worry about getting attacked. He uses his remaining turns to try and self-heal from our own attacks, and we manage to kill him off before he can get another shot at us. Rumi gets promoted to Level 7 after the battle and I allocate her skill points to Psionics, then we leave the area. I make sure to rest the party, collect Lifegiver from Rumi and grenades from Bellamy, then make sure our party is properly equipped. Tom needs to have both Plasma Grenades in our possession, but he’s so overstocked that Bellamy gave the new one to Rumi. I make sure it’s moved to Tom while putting the Ion Grenade into inventory—I’ve been putting them there for the time being, since they only work against robot targets. From there, we return to Sector B2 and head directly to the remaining exclamation point, where King Rock is. We can now try to attack him.

Tom notes that the tunnel splits into three different paths, so we have to make a decision about which way to go. Fortunately, I’ve played the game before and know that the center route is always correct, so we head in that direction. As we advance, Rumi warns that there’s something along the path expecting to meet us. We can backtrack or press forward; pressing forward is the correct option. We continue, and Rumi was correct as usual—some Matrick Workers intercept us further down. However, these Matricks appear friendly and offer to help us. They claim that the only way to King Rock’s home base is so well-hidden we won’t be able to find it on our own, so they’ll lead us there. It sounds suspicious, but the Matricks are sincere—they say that whatever our plans for the Matrick race are, nothing could be worse than living under King Rock. He must be quite a horrible tyrant if these Workers are willing to turn against their own species, so we agree to accept their aid. They show us a hidden tunnel that, sure enough, leads us right to King Rock. Sadly, our friends don’t survive long—they’re immediately killed by King Rock when he sees them—but what matters is that we’re here. Our group and King Rock verbally taunt each other, and then King Rock calls on his soldiers to attack us. Since we attacked the Breeders, he has nobody to help him, to his astonishment. We get credit for completing the Breeder quest at this point, and Philipp gains a level; I allocate his skill points to Light Weapons. Even alone, however, King Rock is a formidable foe.
