160This is my attempt at creating an arrangement of "Play Hard," the song used for Orchid's stage in Killer Instinct 2 (arcade) and Killer Instinct Gold (N64), for playback on the SNES.
Am I crazy, or does Orchid look just like Janet Jackson?
I was curious to see if the SNES could handle something like this at decent quality, and I was surprised at how well it actually worked out! The samples I used were pulled directly from the N64 game and had to be edited, tuned, relooped, and downsampled to fit within the cramped memory limits of the SPC700. This is all playing back without an audio driver that can swap memory banks to stream longer samples, and so it all must fit within the 64k of RAM available to the sound processor. Thankfully, the SNES's filtering and reverb abilities are pretty good at smoothing out some of the harshness that comes with low sample rates. Even though I had to axe some background parts, simplify much of the percussion, and repurpose several samples for double-duty, this came out far closer to the original than I ever expected it too.
I recorded the audio for this video off of a US launch model SNES with an SD2SNES flash cart. The video clips were recorded from the KI2 arcade game and the original KI on SNES. (It also shaved off a few precious kilobytes from the vocal samples that I needed elsewhere!)
Who didn't love this song blasting when they were fighting Orchid? It's fun and energetic and dancey ...bouncy, even ;) I'm amazed that Nintendo went along with her design - to me she was so oversexualized it was hilarious, but my buddies loved dat CG T&A a whole lot. Lol, thank god I never have to be 14 ever again like I was when this came out. Good memories, but yeah. No.
