The House of the Dead III (Wii) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
353A playthrough of Sega's light gun rail shooter for the Nintendo Wii, The House of the Dead III, included as part of the 2008 compilation "The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return."
Played through the arcade on the default difficulty settings. I have red blood turn on and the crosshairs disabled. I finish the game with an overall S ranking and get the best ending.
There's really no denying how awesome most of Sega's Wii efforts were - there were so many quality original games and conversions of classic arcade games that they produced for the machine that they almost matched their early 90s output for quality software.
The House of the Dead 2 & 3 return is in no way an exception to that. It was a budget priced ($30 new, iirc?) compilation that was perfectly suited to the abilities of the Wii controller.

House of the Dead 3 was a bit of a change from the first two. Of course it still retains the excellent graphics, terrible voice acting, and throngs of constantly attacking gross dead stuff from the first two games, but now you can chose alternate paths and you wield a shotgun instead a pistol. The shotgun shells do provide for more ludicrous gibs (sorry, I had to) than the earlier games, but it's also far slower to reload, so you have to be quite a bit more deliberate in your aim and far more thoughtful in how you spend each shot and when to reload. It makes for an even harder game than 2 was, but it is still just as satisfying. And ridiculously fun.
HotD2 was essentially arcade perfect on the Wii, but the original HotD3 ran on more powerful hardware than 2 did. It ran on the Sega Chihiro board (which was essentially a slightly upgraded Xbox system), which explains why the Xbox version does indeed look better. But though the quality of the graphics do take a slight hit in the port, it's not particularly noticeable with how fast the game moves along - some of the models have been simplified, the texture quality is a bit lower, and the framerate occasionally takes a hit, but it's still an excellent port with arcade-perfect controls. Everything from the coin-op and Xbox games is here, and new features and options are unlocked with successive playthroughs.
But really, I wasn't kidding when I said this game was hard. I don't know if it's humanly possible to get an SS rank - I really had to practice hard to manage to get to an S rank like I did in this video. The trick to it, for anyone that plays this, is to play with the nunchuk connected. You can use its trigger along with the remote's trigger to fire far faster than you normally could using just the remote, and some of the bosses really require that you have that level of speed to avoid getting hit. Before I figured this out, I could usually get a B rank overall, and occasionally I could manage an A. Once I figured out how I could fire quicker, the S finally became possible.
Seriously, remember that if you play this. You will be glad you did.

It's pretty funny to see shotguns made out of Dreamcasts and keyboards, I have to say.
