Welcome to #PlayingHardball
We are playing the Prologue of Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty.

In this final video for the prologue I am sharing my thoughts on the game and give a conclusion.

Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty is a turn-based WW2 strategy game made by the Ukrainian studio Starni Games and published by Hyperstrange in 2023.

The Strategic Mind game series is based on the good old Panzer General concept and adds modern game mechanics, graphics and effects plus a historical narrative and a number of other features. A very promising concept indeed!

Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty is based on the Soviet Assault on Finnland, the Winter War (also called Soviet-Finnish War) that lasted from 30 November 1939 to 13 March 1940. Historically the Finnish Troups resisted the Soviets despite being outnumbered and outgunned and managed to maintain their independence, In the end they were forced to agree to the loss of a significant chunk of their territory though.

Players represent a Finnish general who tries to resist the Soviet masses with the limited military capabilities Finnland had.

Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty offers many historic and some fictive scenarios. It is a successor to the classic and highly renown Panzer General series (which was first published in 1994 by SSI) and is - when looked at the core game mechanics - relatively similar, but also contains many new features:
Units can be equipped with special items or upgrades ranging from mortars for infantry, winter clothing, incendiary ammunition for artillery to attached medic teams. Units gain experience and can choose different abilities when gaining levels. The game contains a narrative and many cut-scenes which add to the atmosphere.

The game is being played on a hex-field map. It can be described as a more complicated (and more interesting) variant of chess.
The game sports a great variety of units like different types of infantry, artillery, tanks, anti-air or anti-tank, cavalry, fighter planes, tactical bombers, strategic bombers and naval units many of which are historically accurate WW2 models.

In the game as a military general the player's goal is not only to be successful in the missions but also to accumulate prestige. With prestige you pay for new units, replacements and technological upgrades.

The game includes also a logistical layer. There are supply points that have to be under control in order to supply the troops at the front with much needed fuel and ammunition.
As with most games in this genre the whole political dimension of WW2 and the commited crimes by most factions involved are not the primary focus. So reading and thinking about the topic on your own is advised. The game wants to do more in this regard than others though.

In this Let's Play we will play the complete Tutorial and Prologue on the side of the Finns starting in 1939 with the Soviet assault on Finnland.
