Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination (from the PC demo) IS NOT running on the Playstation 4 hence lighting differences. Quote from Epic [SVOGI] was our prototype GI system that we used for Elemental last year. And our targets, given that we've had announced hardware from Sony, that's where we're going to be using Lightmass as our global illumination solution instead of SVOGI," senior technical artist and level designer Alan Willard told Eurogamer, stressing that this new iteration of the technology has evolved significantly beyond the current-gen system used in titles like Mass Effect 3. Certainly, just the presence of so much more memory on next-gen platforms should improve lightmap quality on its own."
The Unreal Engine is one of the biggest names in the gaming industry, and has been used for some of the biggest titles out there, including Mass Effect and Gears of War. Now, the Unreal Engine 4 has finally been up and running on Sony's up and coming Playstation 4 hardware.
Before the footage was recorded in real time on a PC, the PC was fairly beastly - an Intel I7 CPU, a Nvidia GTX 680 providing the graphics power and finally, 16GB of DDR3 RAM.
Now we have the Playstation 4, which of course features the AMD Jaguar, 18GCN cores and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. So the question is how well does the PS4 run the Unreal Engine 4 Elemental Demo?
Pretty damn well, there have been a few compromises - mostly in the area of the textures and lighting - but overall, it runs pretty damn nicely indeed. Remember also that this is still early in development - and the engine will likely improve some on both the PS4, Xbox 720 and PC. The engine has been built to take full advantage of next generation technology found in the new consoles.
