A Pigeon's Tale is a middle-grade science fiction and fantasy novel by S.A. Mahan, published in 2015. The story follows an extraordinary eight-hundred-year-old pigeon named Walter, originally known as Young Squeaker, who escapes a rancher's coop after a wildcat attack. He migrates to New York City, where he learns about urban survival from seasoned city pigeons. Walter eventually forms a bond with a boy named Kenny and his family in Texas, including Kenny's terminally ill sister, Dottie. As he spends time with Kenny's grandfather, the scientist Sir Alfred Jerome, Walter discovers he has unique abilities, such as tapping into the collective memory of pigeons and communicating at a sub-quantum level. With Sir Alfred's guidance, Walter learns of an impending natural disaster known as The Big One and becomes crucial in the effort to save the world’s children. The story evolves into a Christian allegory, where Walter seeks the help of The Great White Stork to cure Dottie and assist in creating a safe haven called Skynest, ultimately reaffirming faith in the afterlife and the promise of a new beginning for the children.
