"Heart-Shaped Box" is a horror novel written by Joe Hill, the pen name of author Joseph Hillstrom King, who is the son of acclaimed horror writer Stephen King. The novel was published in 2007 and is Joe Hill's debut novel.
The story follows the character Judas Coyne, a retired rock musician with a fascination for macabre and unusual artifacts. When he learns of an online auction offering a ghost for sale, he impulsively purchases a dead man's suit, supposedly haunted by the spirit of its former owner. The suit arrives in a heart-shaped box, and with it comes a malevolent and vengeful ghost that begins to torment Judas and those close to him.
As the haunting escalates, Judas is forced to confront his own past and the choices he has made in his life. He is joined by his girlfriend Georgia and a hired psychic investigator named Danny as they attempt to rid themselves of the ghostly presence and protect their lives from its malevolent intentions.
"Heart-Shaped Box" is known for its intense and atmospheric horror, blending supernatural elements with psychological tension. Joe Hill skillfully weaves together elements of ghostly folklore, suspense, and character-driven storytelling. The novel delves into themes of regret, guilt, and the consequences of one's actions, creating a complex emotional backdrop to the supernatural horror.
The novel received positive reviews for its fresh take on the haunted object trope and its ability to evoke fear and unease in readers. Joe Hill's writing style has drawn comparisons to his father, Stephen King, but he brings his own unique voice and storytelling approach to the horror genre.
"Heart-Shaped Box" helped establish Joe Hill as a notable author in the horror genre, and his subsequent works have continued to garner attention and critical acclaim. The novel's success contributed to his rising reputation and his subsequent works, such as "Horns" and "NOS4A2," have solidified his place in the realm of contemporary horror literature.
