The story follows the romantic comedy between Megan Murphy, a young potter, and Dr. Patrick "Pat" Hunter, a pediatrician, set during the Thanksgiving holiday season in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
Megan, a spirited and energetic twenty-seven-year-old, encounters Pat when she discovers a rabbit nibbling on her colonial costume dress. Pat, attracted to Megan, rescues the rabbit, and they develop an instant spark. Their paths cross again when eighteen-year-old Tilly Coogan leaves her baby, Timmy, in Pat's care and disappears. Megan and Pat decide to look after the baby together, sharing duties and growing closer.
As Megan and Pat spend time together caring for Timmy, their mutual attraction deepens, leading to a passionate romance. They envision a Thanksgiving dinner with their families, where Megan begins to appreciate the idea of being part of a ready-made family. However, Megan has been hurt in previous relationships and is hesitant about marriage, while Pat worries about his financial responsibilities.
Complications arise when Megan's ex-fiancé, Dave, appears, and Tilly returns with Timmy's father, Leonard, ready to get married and provide for their child. Megan's emotions are thrown into turmoil, and she pushes Pat for a commitment. In a misunderstanding, Pat lies to Dave about Megan's pregnancy, leading to a confrontation between the two men.
Feeling hurt and betrayed, Megan plans to leave town and focus on her pottery business. However, a series of events, including an accident that brings them back together, prompts Megan to reassess her insecurities and express her love for Pat. Ultimately, Pat proposes, and the couple envisions a Christmas wedding.
"Thanksgiving" by Janet Evanovich explores themes of love, commitment, and overcoming past hurts through a heartwarming and humorous romantic journey set against the backdrop of the holiday season in Colonial Williamsburg.
