Pokemon & Wasted Potential
20,984A lighthearted look into how I believe the Pokemon franchise has endless wasted potential and where I think it could be doing so much more.
I'm aware that Generation 5 (Pokemon Black and White) may seem like somewhat of an outlier in this video. When I'm making general statements or talking about the differences between older, classic main series Pokemon games (i.e. Gens 1-4) and the last decade of Pokemon games (Gens 6-8) I generally leave Gen 5 out. This is because I view Gen 5 as a midpoint between these two eras, if you will, and that they bridge the gap between them to the point where it's hard to generalise with them because they're unlike all the other generations in that way.
So for example, I talk a lot on this video about linearity. Something that the past 3 Generations are riddled with and the first 4 didn't force on you anywhere near as much. Generation 5 is a weird balance between these two. They ARE fairly linear games with you being boxed in and prevented from progressing until you've completed everything in your current location quite often, however they also have quite exploratory route designs and there's a lot of caves and non-essential places to explore and discover regardless. For reasons like this, I didn't really feel like it was fair to lump them in with either of the other two groups, it's not that I'm ignoring them despite my conflicted feelings towards them.
