I felt like doing a Pokemon challenge, and because the tools to set up a 0 experience runthrough that I've been craving aren't available yet, I wondered what I could do in the meantime. I've done a Metronome Only run in Crystal before, so I know what one's like (spoilers: it's FUN) and I figured I might enjoy doing another run while waiting for a possibility to 0 exp. The big changes are firstly the vast amount of new moves introduced since gen 2 and secondly the existence of Z-Metronome which can be used as early as the 1st island and can introduce a wide range of possible powerful outcomes in-battle.

Back when I did the Crystal Metronome run, I kept things limited to what can be done in the context of a normal playthrough in the game. I started with solo Togepi, evolving it, then catching a Snubbull and breeding for two that also know the move, subsequently introducing Clefable with the same move. I realised quickly that doing the same in this run wouldn't be anywhere as feasible - the event Munchlax may know Metronome, but you can't actually breed it until the 2nd island, meaning Snorlax needs to somehow muscle through the fighting island kahuna battle, which he probably without intense overlevelling. You also can't get Clefairy until rather late, Granbull comes way too late, and Togepi can bred only in the postgame since Togekiss is an island scan exclusive. Finally, I'm considerably busier than I was when I did the Crystal metronome run, so I'd rather not spend any time doing breeding at all.

So what I did was edit Cleffa, Happiny with an Oval Stone, Snubbull, and Togepi into my Moon save, all with Metronome as their only move granting me a full team early on. Without save editing, the same is doable with trading, but I didn't want to overlevel as a result of getting boosted experience, so this seemed like a sensible solution.

Ilima is the first opponent in the game who's sorta tough. His two Pokemon have perfect IVs in most stats as well as strategically chosen stats for 252 EVs, which does wonder for how his mons function in the battle. Many people who have played the new games may remember having some trouble with the Smeargle in this battle. While it may have 20 base atk / sp. atk., Technician increases both of its moves and IVs/EVs further bolster the power of Ember/Leafage/Water Gun (depends on your starter; since mine is Rowlet, I'm facing Ember) and Tackle.

My tactical tools are a bit barren at this point in the game. I do have a Silk Scarf I can give to somebody, and a Quick Claw which basically anyone doesn't mind, but no berries or Z-moves.

The bulky Yungoos has Stakeout, meaning it strikes switch-ins really hard. I do switch out nevertheless, as I want to preserve my Snubbull for the Smeargle fight. As a lead, Intimidate allows me to use Metronome more often while the enemy does decreased damage so I'm ready to sacrifice my other mons to preserve it for the next matchup. One of one of my attempts, I KO'd Yungoos with a lucky Superpower proc. Here, it was a mixture of different less potent moves.

For Smeargle, I had a sorta specific plan. Thick Fat Munchlax can tank Embers forever, but Tackle really puts a dent into it. By Intimidating it first, preferably repeatedly, I can leave Munchlax in until it runs out of Metronome PP.

This however doesn't happen. To switch Snubbull for another Intimidate, I sacrifice Chansey, but it does the unexpected for me before dying - Final Gambit on a Pokemon with very high max HP just before getting killed is really huge, and makes it very easy for Snubbull to grab the kill.

So the only natural user of Metronome was left outside of action this time around.
