In Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow, depending on the kind of move used and on who the turn holder is, the animation shown when applying an attack to the target will be different.

- Enemy mon has used a damaging move without a side effect: Shake screen vertically
- Enemy mon has used a damaging move with a side effect: Rapidly shake screen horizontally (heavy)
- Enemy mon has used a non-damaging move: Slowly shake screen horizontally (long)
- Player mon has used a damaging move without a side effect: Blink sprite
- Player mon has used a damaging move with a side effect: Rapidly shake screen horizontally (light)
- Player mon has used a non-damaging move: Slowly shake screen horizontally (short)

Many non-damaging moves don't play any of these animations at all though, but those that do, play the animation specified above.
