This hack corrupts one of the general registers during every VBlank (which occurs every ~17ms). Different instructions will yield different results, depending on which register you hack and which value you load into it (what's more, even the same instruction can yield a different result each time, as it's subject to the timing of the process).

If you want to try this out, in the memory viewer of your emulator (or directly in the ROM with a hex editor; this corrupts the game permanently unless you change everything back) write the following hex numbers at the following addresses:

0042: C3
0043: E5
0044: 1D

Then try one of these options:

- Write at 0040 one of these: 06, 0E, 16, 1E, 26, 2E, and any number at 0041 (01 often works best)
- Write 00 at 0040 and at 0041 write one of these: 04, 05, 14, 15, 24, 25, 0C, 0D, 1C, 1D, 2C, or 2D
- Write CB at 0040 and anything at 0041
- Write 00 at 0040 and write any number between 40 and 7F (except 76) at 0041
