Police Quest 1 was made in 1987, and it only supported EGA graphics. Sierra made a remake of this game in 1992, so it is essentially the same game with much better graphics. I never played the original Police Quest 1 game, but I did buy this game in 1992. This is a typical Sierra On-Line game from 1987 to 1992, you have the same kind of interfaces as the Kings Quest series, Leisure Suit Larry series, Space Quest series, The Quest for Camelot, etc.

Game developers at the time tried to make the most out of the limited technology that they had. They used a technique of using a background with a still image with 2-d sprites. You can see the characters moving in a still environment. Today, we have interactive real environments in games, you can see the clouds move, in some games you can see trees branches move in the wind, thunder storms, etc.

Police Quest 1 VGA was a pretty difficult game to play, because you don't know what to do when you start the game. A lot of Sierra On-Line games of this type were like this. Back in the day, they used to sell hint books to play these games, because they were so difficult to play. They even had hotlines you could call to get hints, and they charged about $1 a minute!

Games like this came with manuals, and you really had to read the manual to play the game. The manual had the map for the city, so you could navigate through the city. The manual had the police codes, you had to use for booking suspects into the prison. The manual was a kind of copy protection the game. The game itself didn't have a copy protection, you could easily copy it to anyone's hard drive.

I did finish this game without any hints back in 1992, but I did play it for many hours. I played it because I wanted to find out what was next, it was like reading a novel or watching a movie. Games back in those days were very difficult to play, and in a way it was a choir to play these games. Because when games are too hard, it isn't fun anymore. For this game, you have to really take notes, so when I played games like this. I would have a physical notebook and a pen to take notes. That is how people played games like these. You had to save the game often, because one mess up means you have to start all over again. For example in the last part of the game, you need to follow directions exactly, or it would lead you to a dead end.

You can still play games like this on Dosbox, and I am glad people saved the original manuals and game data. This enables people to play a piece of history, and it gives them a idea of how early 1990s games were like.
