Pontiac GTO "The Judge" (1969) | Hagerty Collection | #pontiac #pontiacgto #gto #thejudge #gt7
"The ultimate sports spec car that appeared towards the end of the GTO era, when muscle cars flourished."
The first-generation Pontiac GTO, which was introduced in 1964, was a big hit and is credited for the boom in street-legal muscle cars. The second-generation model followed in 1968 with a more stylish fastback style and decent performance. It wasn't enough to prevent the GTO from losing its king-of-the-hill status to its increasingly impressive rivals, however.
Keen to rectify this situation, in 1969, General Motors released a new GTO known as "The Judge." The standard sports package wore an exclusive logo and stripe decals, and powered by a 6.6-liter V-8 "Ram Air 3" engine that was said to be capable of more than the advertised 360.9 HP. It was mated to a Hurst shifter. The car had a heavy-duty suspension system, wide tires, and a rear spoiler. Despite all this, it only cost S332 more than the standard GTO. In terms of both performance and sheer presence, it outdid its rivals and attracted plenty of attention.
Muscle cars such as the GTO started to disappear when strict emissions regulations were introduced a couple of years later.
