Hey everyone!

Welcome to another episode of Merging with the Machine - the series through which we explore less familiar aspects of the shmup journey and experience (with a heavy focus on mindset, approach and dissolving that which holds us back).

In today's episode we're diving into the topic of "poor reflexes" and how this is something I often see people use as a reason (excuse and/or misunderstanding) for why they "suck at shmups", "can't play them", improve, etc.

So if you want to get good at shmups, be sure to give this a spin as I shed some light on a few things that may help you overcome yourself.

Enjoy the video and thanks so much for watching!

Clarification on "laziness".

There has been some confusion as to my use of the word laziness.

My use of the word laziness relates to when we know something will require our effort, and we choose not to put forth that effort. The definition of "lazy" is: "unwilling to work or use energy". Expressing what I do in this episode may sound callous but look at it this way - we can mask laziness all we want with whatever reasons we tell ourselves. However, it's still laziness, so we might as well be honest with ourselves if we're truly going to start overcoming habits that go against what we claim we want to do or achieve, etc.

That being said, laziness is NOT in reference to those genuinely interested in improving but are currently struggling because they don't know how best to overcome a challenge. Does that sound like someone who is lazy? Of course not.

There is a vast difference between someone who is unwilling to work or use energy to improve at shmups (being lazy) and someone who is simply having a rough time but possesses a true desire to reach their goal and who is willing to put forth the work and energy (and make no mistake, shmups require both to one degree or another).

I trust this helps clear up the confusion.
