Portal Runner (PS2) Gameplay
160Oh yes. That's right. I went there. This was a recent cheap buy that I couldn't resist. I know what the reviews said about the game, but to be fair, it's honestly not that bad from what I've played of it. Maybe it gets worse later, but even the Gamefaqs user reviews of the game seem favorable. As far as 3DO made games go, you could do worse.
I haven't gotten that far in the game mind you, so it may have some annoying parts later on. So far the biggest annoyances are the control scheme (which uses pressure the sensitive D-pad, so you have to push down pretty hard on it to move smoothly) and Vicki's annoying one liners. Sorry sweetheart, Duke Nukem you're not.
I'm not quite sure who they were marketing it to. It seems like they were trying to get little girls to play (especially with the whole collecting of gem stones thing), but the controls are a little too tough for kids. It has a Tomb Raider style control scheme that definitely doesn't have the pick up and play feel to it. It takes some learning, and probably more patience and attention than the average kid would have.
I don't know, sometimes I like to buy games that are considered to be "terrible" by gamers and the gaming media just to try them out. When they hit a few bucks, I'll check and see if I can agree with their complaints, or if it's just people sensationalizing a game's flaws making it seem worse than it really is.
NOTE: I swear Sarge's voice was in Goof Troop, and some other Disney shows.
