This castle is one of the most interesting historical sites in Britain. It consists of a huge square outer bailey originally built as a fort by the Romans. Centuries later the Normans built a small castle in one corner and two more floors were then added to the keep, along with a barbican. Further domestic buildings were constructed in the 14th century. In one corner of the outer bailey sits the remains of an Augustine priory. An audio tour is included within the price of admission.
