Porteus is a fast, portable and modular live CD/USB medium based on Slackware Linux. The distribution started as a community remix of Slax, another Slackware-based live CD, with KDE 3 as the default desktop for the i486 edition and a stripped-down KDE 4 as the desktop environment for the x86_64 flavour. The lightweight LXDE is available as an alternative desktop environment.
A new development build of Porteus, a set of stripped-down Slackware-based live CDs with a choice of seven desktop environments, is now available for testing: "On behalf of the Porteus development team, I'm happy to announce the release of Porteus version 5.0-RC3. Almost a year after RC2, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the 7 flavors are now available. You can download the releases at any of our mirrors in the Porteus-v5.0 folder of your desired arch(x86_64 or i586). To bring us up to date with Slackware's current development, some under-the-hood changes include: the implementation of PAM, the replacement of ConsoleKit with elogind, and Python upgrade to 3.9.6. Certain packages have increased in size (e.g. MESA, LLVM) so the ISO images are now ranging between 335MB and 425MB (slightly less for 32-bit images). All desktop environments are updated to their latest versions, with the stable kernel 5.12.14.
Porteus is a complete linux operating system that is optimized to run from CD, USB flash drive, hard drive, or other bootable storage media. It's small (under 300Mb) and insanely fast which allows you to start up and get online while most other operating systems are left spitting dust. Porteus comes in both 32 & 64 bit and aims to keep on the bleeding edge. It also supports several different languages and the user forum has language sections.
In addition to the comfortable and "full-blown" desktop environments KDE Plasma , the MATE Desktop Environment, LXQt and LXDE as well as Xfce and the Cinnamon known from Linux Mint , the extremely resource-saving window manager Openbox is available under Porteus 5.0.
The portable operating system is based on Slackware , the oldest still active Linux distribution and the first to be widely used worldwide, and runs either as a live system on a storage medium or completely with the help of option 3 during the boot process (“Load to RAM”) in the computer's memory. This shows the parallels to ExTIX 21.05 , which has a similar feature.
After the boot process using “Load to RAM”, the USB storage medium can be removed, since the entire distribution runs in the
