Portrait Using Dry Old Oil Paints
Painting with dry paints, oil on paper. This portrait's result was tied directly to my frugality...okay, cheapness. I had some paint sitting on my palette a couple of days, but I wanted to stretch it out as long as possible. But this stuff was probably too dry and stiff. I tried to revivify with some linseed oil, but there's only so much i can do there. Also, I tried to came back to this one another day, which is not my usual way - I typically try to knock portraits out in one session.
To my surprise, this portrait actually seemed to turn out. I really didn't think it was going to come together, but in the end, somehow the features eventually crystalized and started to look like a person. Interestingly (to me anyway), this painting seems to look much different close up versus a couple of feet away. I guess many paintings are like that to some extent, but this one is one of the most stark differences I've had. Some details just don't hold up on close inspection.
