Power Blade 2 for the NES is a 1992 action platformer developed and published by Taito as the sequel to the original Power Blade. Released late in the NES’s life cycle, the game builds on its predecessor’s foundation with upgraded visuals, more complex level design, and a slightly darker tone. The story once again follows Nova, the musclebound hero from the first game, who is now tasked with stopping a rogue government weapon project that threatens global security. Armed with a high-tech boomerang weapon and a new set of armored suits, Nova must infiltrate enemy strongholds and eliminate the threat.

The gameplay sticks closely to the side-scrolling action formula, with players running, jumping, and fighting their way through a series of stages. Each stage ends in a boss fight and can only be accessed through an overworld hub, where the player selects missions in a semi-linear order. A new feature in Power Blade 2 is the addition of four different power suits that Nova can acquire and equip. Each suit has its own unique abilities, such as improved defense, vertical climbing, or a powerful special weapon, adding a layer of strategy to how players approach different sections of the game.

Visually, Power Blade 2 is a step up from the first game. The graphics are more detailed, character sprites are well-animated, and the environments range from high-tech labs to mechanical fortresses, each with its own visual identity. The game uses a darker, more industrial color palette than its predecessor, reflecting the more serious tone of the story. The soundtrack is solid, with energetic, high-tempo chiptunes that match the pace of the action, though the music isn’t especially varied.

While Power Blade 2 offers deeper mechanics and more polish than the original, it also ramps up the difficulty. Enemy placement and platforming sections are less forgiving, and the limited number of continues can make later levels feel punishing. Still, for experienced players or fans of NES action games, it delivers a satisfying challenge. As one of the last notable action titles released for the NES, Power Blade 2 is a technically impressive and ambitious sequel that showcases what the system could still do near the end of its lifespan.
