Power Interview: André Perfeito, Economist

💰 Poder Economia | Economist André Perfeito, 47, says that Congress' decision to overturn the changes that increased the IOF (Tax on Financial Transactions) is a defeat that does not fall solely on Finance Minister Fernando Haddad.
“The defeat, without a doubt, was the minister's, but it is not [only] the minister's, in fact. What is evidenced by this move by [Speaker of the Chamber] Hugo Motta is precisely an inability to coordinate between the Palácio do Planalto and the National Congress,” he told Poder360.
Here are other points from the interview:
– Lula in 2026 – “Many people from Faria Lima, and I agree with the hypothesis, think that Lula will not win in 2026. That's fine. But, if a right-wing president comes in with a Congress like this one, he's screwed”;
– dollar vs. real – “It’s not the real that has become strong, it’s the dollar that has become weak. So, first, think about some reasons that could make the dollar weak. One of the main ones has to do with Trump’s economic policy”;
– barrel of oil – “If Iran finds itself in a situation where it has no other option than to close the Strait of Hormuz to get everyone to discuss this issue and resolve it, it could hit [US$ 100]. [...] This tension will continue to exist. Does that necessarily mean that it’s bad for Brazil? Not at first. I insist that we have this natural ‘hedge’, we produce a lot of oil”;
– Trump’s tariff hike – “It doesn’t make economic sense. [...] He won’t be able to deliver on this ‘Make America Great Again’ promise, because the industrial jobs he imagines he can bring back to the United States can’t be returned.”
