TO BE CLEAR: this is a PREVIEW build-what we got a chacnce to play around with is only scraping the surface, and there is much more to come in the final build as evidenced by their socials! SIFU is what happens when a company like Sloclap (yes I am aware there is a typo in captions, fixing!) goes BIG on their first game (Absolver), fleshes out battle systems, styles, and flow that are true to SEVERAL martial arts styles, allows you as a player to deck build on it, and they step back to go:
'Oh, right, we could just do one system, huh.'
And so SIFU takes an extremely robust series of systems and pushes them into one comprehensive, level building one, turning an absolutely-true-to-form fighting game into a roguelike, where you play as a student looking to avenge their sifu with an interesting caveat: every time you die, you age. The more quickly you die in succession, the more rapidly you will age, officially ending the run when you reach age 80 or higher (from what it looks like). Anyone who has played Absolver is going to feel right at home, whereas the current changes make for a much more welcoming experience for newer players to the format. The one thing that is killing this preview right now is the camera. We joke in the Wine Cellar that 'the camera is always the final boss'-but man, just once I want it to not be true. However, it's no SO EGREGIOUS that you'll find yourself thinking it impossible to play-just expect a combo or two to drop since the camera decided that wall looked REALLY nice.
SIFU comes out February 8th, 2022 on PS4, PS5 and Epic GamesStore, with a TBD for Steam. Recently announced: there will be PHYSICAL COPIES in Spring of 2022! Fast-paced, focused, in-depth, kung-fu driven REVENGE is never not a good time, but man these stunt camera-men could use some work.
