Sections 1 and 2: Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers
Since we are getting started on algebra, I wanted to give you a quick introduction on rational numbers, otherwise known as signed numbers. This is similar to adding whole numbers but this involves using negative numbers. The same can be said with fractions as well. To add numbers with two negative signs, just treat them as whole numbers to get the final result, if you are adding numbers with unlike signs, change it into a subtraction problem and then get the final result.
