In recent years, scientific studies on environmental pollution in Turkey continue uninterruptedly.
In this context, one of the names who have been working for more than 30 years is Prof. Erciyes University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry. Dr. Mustafa Soylak. Demonstrating the effectiveness of carbon nanotubes, which are used to separate heavy metal pollution in water, in the laboratory environment, Prof. Dr. Soylak was deemed worthy of an award in the Engineering, Natural and Health Sciences category within the scope of the Dissemination of Knowledge Awards. Receiving the award from the former Prime Minister at the ceremony held with the participation of the President recently, Prof. Dr. Soylak spoke to Milliyet about his scientific studies aimed at reducing the pollution load in water resources in the coming years. We asked the details of the scientific research that will help prevent heavy metal pollution in water resources in the future. Dr.
"The basis of the work for which we received the award is based on the separation and enrichment of heavy metal heaps, which are a big problem in environmental pollution. We used carbon nanotubes with self-binding feature of heavy metals in our laboratory studies. We have enabled the separation of heavy metal in water for the first time with the products we call nano technological materials. After placing the tubes in a special material we call a column, we passed the water with heavy metal pollution through this column. The system carried out the purification process by holding the heavy metal particles."
Adding to his words that the results obtained from the scientific study at the laboratory stage give hope for the future, Prof. Dr. Soylak continued as follows: "In the coming years, the carbon nanotubes on which we have obtained successful results will be able to be used commercially in the prevention of water pollution or in treatment plants. Placing the nano technology we have developed in appropriate sources and preventing heavy metal pollution is among our biggest goals. Appropriate investment in the coming years. We will go a long way towards heavy metal pollution with the opportunities and progress of our work. Our prototype work continues. If we find a source, we can establish a trial station in certain parts of a polluted stream or river and have the chance to observe the results in the field. Thanks to the carbon nano tube method, heavy metals can be found in polluted waters and treatment plants. An important step can be taken in the prevention of environmental pollution by ensuring separation. One gram of carbon nano technology material contains millions of micro-scale particles. Each micro-part is above the heavy metal particles. what makes it stick.”
