Wassup everybody, it’s Heracles Porsche here, and in today’s video I wanted to discuss CCPs newest project that’s being developed, and ask the question, why is CCP using blockchain technology in it’s newest project?

Let’s be honest, blockchain technology has a bad reputation among gamers. It has a much better reputation for being useful in the corporate world
-but for gamers blockchain technology brings up associations with things like the
-Axie infinity hack
-blockchain games to date haven’t been known for good gameplay
-and just the sort of general reluctance to get involved because of it’s association reputation wise with things crypto and NFTs

However in spite of all these facts, many game companies such as square unix, 22can, and this case, CCP games are completely committed to game development using said blockchain technology.
So why would a company like CCP which I’m sure is well aware of all these facts choose to use blockchain technology in it’s development of it’s new game Project awakening

The most obvious reason of course is because thy have secured a 40 million dollar investment from Andreessen Horowitz.

A multibillion dollar investment firm. 40 million is obviously no small amount to get started on game development.

The second reason, and this is more speculation on my part is because CCP has ideas for blockchain technology that are new or different enough from previous attempts to make this technology work successfully in their new game idea.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Project Awakening. We know it’s going to be a survival style game on a single shard, which essentially means single server. The release also describes a quote broken world, which to me that’s like shades of Enshrouded, so maybe this game will be like a science fiction attempt to imitate the success that Enshrouded has been having. Although of course it’s been in development for roughly a year.

So I think assumption that CCP must be trying to something very different from other blockchain game with this technology holds some weight. Obviously so far, the blockchain elements have been pretty front and center to the Project Awakening discussion. Just trying to make some assumptions about this game’s chances of success, from a gaming enjoyment perspective, I would have to assume that for Project Awakening to succeed, it would need to have the survival gameplay or whatever the new gameplay elements to reasonably central to the game in order for it to succeed, with the blockchain technology complimenting the other gameplay elements rather than overwhelming it. It’s also reasonable to assume there will be some kind of play to earn mechanic. CCP does have experience with this, such as how in EVE Online you can pay for the game with the game’s in game currency.

Also, we do know a playtest is planned for may 21st. We likely won’t get many details during the playtest as CCP is continuing with the typical style of having players sign NDAs during playlets. In addition since announcing that back in march, CCP has also been releasing cryptic pieces for lore from the game, which I’ll probably make a video about in the future when enough lore has been released that we can start stringing some reasonable assumptions together.

But that’s all from me now on Project Awakening. I obviously really enjoy survival games, so I’m really hoping CCP’s new gaming idea Let me know in the comments below if you think CCP can make blockchain technology work in its new game idea.
