You would expect any ordinary racing simulator to be a horrid experience without a steering wheel, but Project CARS claims to cater for both the hardcore and casual audiences - so I select Amateur mode and head online with a friend (who's using a wheel) and compare times.

Having not raced using a keyboard since around the time that NFS Carbon was released, I was quite surprised and impressed at how a few different cars behaved via digital inputs. Whilst forgiving, I still felt connected to the car, and instinctively knew when I could push into controllable oversteer, and when to back off or even dab the brakes. I'd still expect your average wheel user to always be faster, but this may not be a big deal if hardcore players remain a minority (at least on consoles) and keep to their own private leagues.

Tick of approval from me.
