One thing to be careful of is that some items need to be interacted with. You can just drop items into the compost bin, for example, but unless you 'go through' the circle it isn't really added in. Drag items into the circles to make certain they are where they need to be. Pay attention to the messages in the upper left hand corner of your screen as well. You can overfill the compost bin or add items that won't decompose if you don't.
