Project Lavina Beta 1. Real Time Raytracing. Geometry leaves test. 414 billion polys
Project Lavina (now in Beta 2) is an upcoming Chaos Group product for real-time exploring and manipulating of V-Ray scenes within a 100% ray-traced environment.

In this test, I am testing 414 billion polygons. One tree - 9 million polygons. Leaves are made by geometry, not by an opacity map. There was no opacity map support in the first beta.
I asked - why? And one of the users at a closed forum said that this is inconvenient, especially in creating grids or wireframes in an architectural render. If you model each - it will take a very long time.
As a result, the developers wrote a detailed answer:
Technically, you can.
Just as you can model individual leaves on trees, and exact, complex cutout shapes.
It's laborious, and it requires one to use the right tools/workflow, but it's been done, to the limits of computing power, since forever.
Stochastic opacity will not save you from the terminal issue opacity has the countless overlaps.
It will ameliorate it, but there will still be (many) specific scenarios where geometry would just breeze past without even waving.
As there will be a number of cases where opacity can't be done without (modeling semi-transparency with geometry and shader, but no opacity map, it would likely prove a lot more expensive.).
Front-loading the work to get performance is of course not always feasible (for a number of reasons), but stating "it can't be done" isn't quite exact.
That is, based on many tests - they claim that the geometry is much better rendered and in some cases faster ...
I decided to test this theory and indeed, Lavina is not bad at handling the load. As you can see.
