Project Power Breakdown
Ok so Project Power is a superhero story written by Mattson Tomlin. This is the guy who's heading up the screenwriting for the upcoming Batman film, so naturally I was really interested to see what his first comic book inspired movie would be like.
For years Comic Books have tried to convey the message that anyone can be a hero and Project Power puts a slightly darker twist on this with there being a drug titled power that grants superhuman abilities to the consumer for five minutes.
Users are unable to know beforehand which power they will be granted with and because of this everything comes with a risk. You could become Spiderman or if you're really unlucky, Electro.
We won't forget Jamie.
We predominantly follow Art aka The Major played by Foxx and Frank by Joseph Gordon Levitt. The former is an ex military man trying to cut the drug off at it's source whilst the latter is a policeman attempting to deal with the reprecussions of those that use it.
We'll get into how they connect in just a bit but those are the two main players.
Now in my opinion Project Power is very much not only about the narcotic Power but also what the word means itself.
Predominantly the people that we see using it are impovrished and undervalued. These poverty stricken people have been powerless their entire lives and naturally when granted the chance to potentially become a god for five minutes, they leap at the chance.
Robin, a character the Art crosses paths with is an aspiring Rapper and she very much represents how talent, passion and drive can be it's own power that can destabilise the system through being something that is difficult for others to possess. This sort of becomes her own power as the movie progresses but it becomes very much how we all have our own individual powers that can elevate us above most.
Mirroring this Frank too takes Power in order to stand a chance against those that do. I feel like the film is arguing the point that there will always end up being escalation in law and order and as both the authorities and those in power try and out match the other we will inevitibly lead to corruption on both sides in order for them to keep up.
Frank clearly shouldn't be taking Power but he still does, arguing with his superiors that it's a necessary evil. With all the protests that are going on against police at the moment there becomes two clear sides in pretty much every debate I've seen.
There is the side that thinks Police possessing the power that they do ultimately leads to them abusing it, whilst others thing that they require that level of Power in order to stand a chance. The movie doesn't necessarily say which side is right and which is wrong but it definitely provides an interesting subtext and talking point whilst the action plays out.
In the end Frank is a good cop that uses his power for good and being good in a world full of corruption in some ways is his superpower...ok I'll stop with the analogies now.
