Prototype Ultima 1 support in ScummVM
Whilst the testing period for World of Xeen support in ScummVM is ongoing, I kind of fell into playing around with disassembling the Ultima 1 game executables. And was pleasantly surprised with just how simple and straightforward all the code is. As expected, I guess, from how old the game is. This video represents a prototype with preliminary rendering of the overworld, cities, castles, and the dungeons, with the ability to walk around just like in the proper game. It's still missing all the combat and character interactions, though, being only a prototype.
At this point, I'm not actually committing to work on the game in earnest, just yet. With the work on both Starship Titanic and World of Xeen just finishing, I want to take some time to properly play some games and relax. But I'll likely spend more time on it later on in the year. One of the things that's intriguing me is the possibility of creating an "enhanced" mode using the tileset from Ultima VI. Just picture playing the game with a proper 256 color palette, and various inventory and UI improvements.
